America - View From the Ground

The Osmania University Engineering College had this wonderful place called the Student's Lounge (1984-86). It was tucked away to the right of the steps as you descend into the quadrangular. It was like a cave, and had some magazines, some chairs and most interestingly a record player. There would be a person who would play our choice of music. And it was an eclectic collection of music.

Till date I am in awe of the cultural secretary (I suspect it was this tall senior of ours called Vijay, a bearded chap who was very active on the cul circuit) who convinced so many diverse groups and got such a fabulous idea executed. I would be in awe of the seniors who sat in the lounge, talking casually to one another, playing some really top of the class music and hoped that I would someday turn out to be as cool as them all. I'd hang out in the lounge for a while by myself, my escape, listen to music, never had the courage to play my own.

The one abiding memory of the lounge was this song by America called 'You can do magic' which never left me after the first time I heard it there. Somehow it got into my body, my skin, my nerves and stayed with me. I searched high and low and the moment I set my eyes on it I bought it.

'View from the ground' the album had more than just the one song. 'Never be lonely', 'You girl', 'Inspector Mills' were all numbers I remember from the album. 'You girl' was a soulful ballad that's beautifully sung. You could do well to learn the song and sing it to your girl.

I heard 'You can do magic' so many times, by myself, with my engineering college pals, and it always leaves me with exactly that same rebellious mood, as if I was in Woodstock or something, from that lounge.

This cassette is undoubtedly dedicated to the spirit of that student's lounge, which was probably the most classiest thing in our college, the people like Vijay and others. It's seriously serious swaggering stuff - this music.
