Little River Band - Greatest Hits

Something about the 'Little River Band' appealed to me and I picked up their greatest hits. However, this was unlike their 'No Reins' album which had a different sound. Most songs were maudlin. The ones that I recollect listening to from this album are 'Man on the mind', 'Lonesome loser' and 'Take it easy on me'. Other songs had titles like 'It's a long way there', 'Help is on its way' and similar stuff. Overall not my favourite. But it remains in good condition.

Sometimes I wonder if the choice of songs I listened to in those days formed my attitude to life in those prime years - the romance of the tragic hero, of the loser. Naturally, no one was listening to these songs with me. There was a particular mood I used to listen to these songs to - can't place exactly what. But it somehow seemed rather eclectic - the sound especially.

We are probably talking about my third year at engineering. This was the year I was dropped from the Ranji side, 1985-86, and I gave up mentally. The euphoria of the previous three years had gone. I tried foolishly to fit in with others academically instead of making the best of my strengths - cricket - where I had reached rather high up into the top 30 fast bowlers in the country. So I started attending classes, ignoring cricket and slowly let it go.

There were no girls to distract me. The pain of failing, of not knowing what to do, lacking guidance and spirit, there's no wonder I listened to such music in my self-pity. Anyway, LRB helped me those days full of confusion and resentment and anger. Thanks LRB. Dedicated then to my failures and my confusion in 1986.
