Prince - The Hits

1985
Prince made an impression with his 'When doves cry' back in 1983. So it was natural that I followed the enigmatic star who changed forms until he was finally known only as a symbol. Prince's music was like nothing I've heard before - very unconventional, raw and sexy.

I did not buy 'Purple Rain' if I remember right but I had my favourites. 'When doves cry' for sure and 'Let's go crazy' Later on I liked 'Gold' as well.

Did someone introduce me to Prince? I am not sure - he was featured in the rock album with Alan Parsons and several others. But everyone liked listening to him. Ranjan liked 'When doves cry'. I know Sunil Jyothi enjoyed Prince as much as I did.

But Prince made me feel differently. Like I could be what I was without giving a care about the world. I could take my bike and head off like he does in 'Let's go crazy', not be nice, just be myself and if you didn't like it, too bad. Nothing about him or his music suggested anything else. For that he will never be mediocre, never another, he will always be unique.

When Prince died, Sunil and I got together and spent an evening listening to Prince songs over a few drinks. Good fun.

Well, I'd dedicate it to that part of me that resonated with Prince. And hope that someday I'll live like that without being reminded of it by his songs.
