The Alan Parsons Project - Ammonia Avenue

I first heard 'Prime Time' in an assorted tape of rock music. I remember buying that tape in Madras on the advice of Vidyuth Jaisimha. I wasn't too impressed with the single - though the name stuck in my head Then Ram bought a tape from his friend and I heard 'Eye in the sky' and was completely sold. i liked the sound.

So when I got a chance to buy 'Ammonia Avenue' I didn't hesitate. Perhaps I bought it in Madras too. The tape had Prime Time, One good reason. Don't answer me, Dancing on a highwire, You don't believe...all eminently listenable numbers. Check out 'You don't believe' and the play of words - stuff I used to trip on. I would find it very exciting.

I got another tape with the other hits later - Psychobabble, Eye in the sky, Old and wise etc.

I think Ram liked 'Eye in the sky' and Sanjay was generally fond of the group. I don't remember anyone else having any great fondness for it though I'd play my numbers in parties without fail. Somehow the tape reminds me of Madras in the 80s - that big music store on Mount Road. There was and is, something nice about Madras, its pongal vadas, coffee, meals etc. Madras reminds me of Dr Sunderam, Satyabhama aunty, Ashal, Lux, cricket matches, Woodlands hotel, Rithu and Sheelu Pai, Topper and Anirudh, beaches, beef fry in an obscure Chinese restaurant on the way to Anna Nagar, Anil Menon and Lalitha, Krishna and Chitra, Alagiri and Vasudha, the week long stay with Sajay, Choudary, Subbu and Ali  on the way to Andamans in a seedy hotel. Hmm...that's a lot.

I think I'll dedicate it to Madras.
