a-ha - Hunting High and Low

a-ha, the Norwegian band formed in 1982,  took the world by storm with this album and its major hit 'Take on me'. There was another number called 'The sun always shines on TV' that I did not like one bit but 'Take on me' was a huge hit that I listened to so many times. Even the video was very well made.

I asked one of the most interesting characters I have met ever, Rakesh Bahal, Ram's friend from JNTU, when he went to Dubai to get me some music. I think he asked me what I wanted. Rakesh was from Delhi, the son of a high ranking government official and brother of an air force officer if I remember right. Rakesh liked the good life, a laugh, a smoke, a drink, some music, and was probably the outlier in the family. For some reason, he shifted from the hostel to the outhouse behind our home.

Rakesh had an eclectic ear for music. Tall and gangly, with a perpetual smile on his handsome face, Rakesh also developed a keen interest in our home-cricket and would walk miles to come over to play. Terrific guy. He'd listen to a lot of heavy metal those days if I remember. He bought me two or three tapes - a-ha, Uriah Heep and another one. I loved all three, especially Uriah Heep and it is my biggest regret that I do not remember who took that tape from me. Every number from Uriah Heep was a classic. As for 'Take on me' - think I taped it for most of my friends who wanted to listen to my music.

Among those who really enjoyed this song was Ajanta Sircar, our good friend who was a staunch supporter of a-ha and particularly 'Take on me'. So this song is dedicated to Ajanta - because she is the one who loved the song 'Take on me' more than anyone else I knew.
