Dire Straits Greatest

I first heard 'Dire Straits' on an assorted tape somewhere - 'So Far Away' was the first song I heard followed by 'Money for Nothing'. It was a different sound and I enjoyed listening to it. But what drove our love for Dire Straits, even more, was the band Katalog and its lead singer Sunil Pradhan from Nagaland, who sang Dire Straits so beautifully. Sunil was studying engineering at JNTU and was Ram's junior. He was a handsome and confident young fellow who could hold a huge audience with his presence and his singing.

My favorites were 'So Far Away', 'Walk of Life' and 'Money for Nothing'. But my all time favourite will be their album 'On Every Street' but we will come to that later. So here's to many rum and coke sessions during our engineering days, or swaying to Katalog and Sunil.

Talking of Sunil, my other music pal Sunil Jyothi was a huge Dire Straits fan and we listened to it a lot. This was also the time when I went and bought a car deck with some money I had saved, helped by Choudary. It was installed with great care in my room in a wooden shelf that also stored the growing collection of cassettes. The car deck would automatically switch sides, showing a green arrow in the direction it was playing, and turning over with a neat click. Looking at the green arrows at night, listening to this fantastic music, playing cricket, going to college, meeting friends, drinking chai - life was beautiful.

We'd bump into friends like Sunil, Ram and others from JNTU AND from other colleges at the college festivals. Osmania Engineering had 'Pot Pourri' and other colleges had their own versions. Most college festivals also had these rock show nights so 'Dire Straits' will always remind me of that.

Since I can never think of Dire Straits without thinking of Sunil Pradhan from Nagaland, this is dedicated to Sunil.
