Deep Purple - Deepest Purple

Sometime in the Osmania University Engineering college days, I chanced upon Deep Purple. Or was it before that I wonder. But I do think I remember hearing Deep Purple in the student's lounge if I am not mistaken. Certainly Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water' was standard fare in later years when there was a rock concert at college festivals.

The band formed in 1968 in England, was considered to be the pioneers in heavy metal and hard rock. Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillian, David Coverdale..it had an impressive list of performers.

Deepest Purple was a collection of Deep Purple' best songs over the years. The numbers included 'Black Night', 'Speed King', 'Strange Kind of Woman', 'My woman from Tokyo', 'Highway Star', 'Smoke on the Water'. All songs still in my head and eminently hummable. They were made good use of on the specially designed 'rock nights' at home where we blasted loud music till 2 am. I cannot understand how the neighbours put up with us.

Sunil Pradhan played this song well for Katalog. But Deep Purple's best memories are with the original rock star - Anil Menon - who'd go off to another planet the moment this kind of music was played. For the one and only truly original Anil Menon then.
